Third, moisture content testing, which is determined by the Karl Fischer method, requiring the moisture content of finished products to be no more than 5.0%. Otherwise, it will affect storage and application stability.
2. Specialized Testing (Classified by Application Scenarios)
The key testing focuses of HPMC vary across different industries:
① Construction-grade HPMC: The key is water retention testing. Through standard mortar specimen tests, the water retention rate is ensured to be no less than 90% to avoid hollowing and cracking after construction.
② Pharmaceutical-grade HPMC: As a pharmaceutical excipient, it is necessary to test for heavy metals (such as lead and arsenic) and microbial counts, which must comply with the standards of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (ChP) 2025 Edition to ensure drug safety.
③ Food-grade HPMC: It is required to test for residual solvents, ash content and other indicators, and can only be used if it meets the national food safety standard GB 1886.103-2016.
III. Adhere to Standards for Testing, Full-Process Control Ensures Reliability
To ensure accurate testing results, unified standards must be followed. Domestically, the commonly used standard is GB/T 29594-2023 “Cellulose Ethers – Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose”, while internationally, references are made to standards such as the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) and European Pharmacopoeia (EP).
For enterprises, it is not only necessary to establish professional testing laboratories and equip them with precision equipment but also to establish a full-process traceability system—from raw material incoming testing, to in-process testing during production, and then to re-inspection before finished product delivery.
