Insufficient water retention easily causes rapid surface drying, cracking and sanding of mortar.
This issue also affects the full hydration of cement.
Poor anti-splash performance leads to material waste and uneven wall plastering during construction.
This problem becomes more prominent especially in high-altitude or vertical construction.Combined with industry practical experience and HPMC application characteristics, the following 4 practical skills can effectively improve HPMC’s two key performances in mortar.
These skills are suitable for various construction scenarios and balance practicality and economy.
I. Precise Selection: Focus on Viscosity and Substitution Degree to Lay a Solid Foundation for Performance
The water retention of HPMC mainly relies on the dense network structure formed by its molecules.This structure can effectively lock water and slow down evaporation.Viscosity and substitution degree are the key indicators for selection.
High-viscosity HPMC (30000-100000mPa·s) has stronger water retention and is suitable for high-temperature and dry environments or thermal insulation mortar.Anti-splash performance needs to balance viscosity and dispersibility.Medium-viscosity models (15000-30000mPa·s) can avoid excessive mortar thickness and difficult construction.They also improve cohesion and prevent sagging and splashing.
In addition, prioritize HPMC with high hydroxypropyl substitution degree.HPMC’s water solubility and film-forming property are better, which can further enhance both water retention and anti-splash effects.
II. Scientific Dosage Control: Avoid Misunderstandings and Balance Performance and Cost
The addition amount of HPMC is not the more the better and needs precise control according to mortar type.This amount is usually 0.1%-0.4% of the weight of mortar dry materials.Among them, plastering mortar is recommended to be controlled at 0.15%-0.3%.Scenarios requiring high-strength water retention such as tile adhesive can be increased to 0.2%-0.4%.
Insufficient addition directly leads to poor water retention and anti-splash effects.Excessive addition, however, will prolong mortar setting time and reduce mechanical strength.
This excess may also cause surface sanding problems.We recommend determining the optimal dosage through small-scale tests before construction to achieve a dual balance of performance and economy.
